RARE ICE CIRCLE RECORDED IN TORONTO AREA CREEK |
|

A Clarkson resident has captured a natural "creek circle" on film.
Brook Tyler, an amateur photographer, was taking photos along Sheridan Creek in the Rattray Marsh Conservation Area last Saturday morning when he stumbled across the unusual six-foot-wide spinning circle of ice.
The 49-year-old said he saw a similar circular ice formation earlier this year during the bitterly cold spring, but it was the first time he had seen it spinning.
Seizing the opportunity, he took a few shots.
"This is another example of something wonderful that you have to get off the beaten path to find sometimes," said Tyler, who for the last two years has been making regular weekly trips outdoors to take photographs of nature.
Cleverly titling it "creek circle," Tyler posted the picture on Flickr, an online photo sharing community earlier this week.
He said the unusual nature of the ice formation made him think of crop circles, patterns that have randomly appeared in farmers' fields.
Since then, the photo has caught the attention of BlogTO, Digg and Flickr members who have all drawn their theories that range from natural to paranormal origins.
While some online community members have suggested the circle was the work of aliens, Tyler believes it was the serendipitous work of nature.
"I would say that the creek is moving at a constant speed and not moving too quickly to wash the ice all the way down," he said. "Ice formed around it and that piece of ice kept turning and turning and actually smoothed it out so that it made it round and not jagged."
