El mito de que no fue un terremoto se sustenta en que durante el temblor se escuchó una gran explosión y algunos vieron una luminiscencia hacia el piedemonte.
Sobre lo primero, Castro explica que en los sismos los efectos sonoros son variados y dependen de la distancia entre perceptor y epicentro.
“En el del 23 de noviembre de 1977, con epicentro en Caucete, en Mendoza primero se percibió un zumbido y luego como un trueno. En este caso, se oyó un estruendo porque fue un sismo local: la población estaba muy cerca del epicentro –sostiene–. Quizás por eso se lo asoció a un misil o la caída de un OVNI. Hasta se llegó a decir que la Fuerza Aérea había cercado la zona. Pero eran fantasías de una comunidad que no tenía registro de un sismo como ese”.
Respecto a la luminosidad entre verde y azul que se vio hacia el oeste, el experto señala que cuando se libera energía mecánica, como ocurre con un terremoto, las moléculas del aire que están muy cerca del piso sufren una ionización.
“En lo oscuro, provoca un efecto luminoso que se ve sobre el horizonte, que es la línea que hay entre el piso y la atmósfera. Es la única relación que puede existir entre la geofísica y la atmósfera. Esto viene al caso ya que mucha gente relaciona la noche serena, las estrellas y la luna brillantes con la posibilidad de un temblor pero no existe tal conexión”, destaca.
