The UFO phenomenon has been demonstrated many times in Uruguay. Thirty years after the start of investigations, some 40 cases still remain unresolved. The archives were declassified and the country allowed access.

The Air Force will not publish a "Blue Book" containing the results of these thirty years of investigations, but it was decided that access to these records and testimony be permitted.

While the committee of the Air Force has been making case studies for the past few decades, the UFO phenomenon began in about 1947 in Uruguay when there was world=wide excitement over such sightings.

Although it is not Roswell, New Mexico - emblematic place in the subject of extraterrestrials, Uruguay is listed as a place for sightings of unidentified objects, as recognized by Colonel Ariel Sanchez, an Air Force officer with 33 years of active service and since 1989 chairman of the committee of the UFO committee.

The agency works in a small office located in downtown Montevideo and has a computer science base and paper files, not yet endorsed technologically. There are hundreds of files in green folders, under the "reserved" label that contains testimonies, photographies, croquis, drawings, documents and evaluations made by the officers.

The files are made up of allegations that were made at a rate of 100 cases per year.

The commission has received approximately 2,100 reports, investigated and dismissed many for different reasons, but there are still more than 40 cases without explanation.

These files remain open and include sightings and alleged landings of craft, reports of kidnapping or abductions of people by extraterrestrial entities.

The international definition devised by the American astrophysicist Allen Haynek divides these situations into three categories: contacts of the first type are those involving sightings; those of the second type are those that register a landing; and those of the third type refer to an encounter with an unidentified flying object and its crew.

The task of the military commission is compiling a registry of cases and to develop guidelines or conclusions as to their origin and veracity. And it has obtained concrete results: "The commission was able to determine modifications to the chemical composition of the soil where landings were reported. The phenomenon exists. It can be anything from a phenomenon that occurs in the lower part of the atmosphere, the landing of an airscraft from a foreign air force to the extraterrestrial theory. It may be a monitoring probe from space, in the same way that we sent a probe to explore distant worlds", said the officer.

"The phenomenon UFO exists in the country. I repeat: the Air Force does not rule out an extraterrestrial hypothesis on the basis of our scientific analysis", emphasized Sanchez.

EVIDENCE
The committee keeps several files on paper, mainly of those cases that are open. The FAU has now declassified all of the information except the files labeled "reserved." These protect the identity of the witnesses.

Reviewing the file, there are all sorts of situations. In one case some time ago in a field in the department of Durazno, the witness reported the appearance of colored lights at night. In giving his testimony to the commission this person marked with great detail the places where an airship would have landed. Analyzing the chemical composition of the soil revealed an increase in the values of minerals such as chromium, manganese, phosphorus and carbon, which allowed researchers to conclude the probable truth of the allegation.

In the military records there is another unique case. It is the appearance of two reddish spheres, flying silently a few meters above the heads of two troperos moving livestock. The apparatuses moved at a high speed in opposite directions and soon they disappeared towards the west at high speed.

Records indicate that the months of highest occurrence of objects are in February, March, July and October. In February of this year the commission received numerous reports accompanied by digital photos. Photography or filming is not decisive as a contribution, Sanchez said, since there are many technical ways to produce them.

The cases had a high level of strangeness for the FAU. For example that in which two military Pucará aircraft embarked one night in 1986. It occurred near the dam of Palmar, where the pilots discovered a revolving luminous sphere. They conferred and decided to pursue the phenomenon. When they tried to intercept it, the sphere escaped at dizzyinh speed in the direction of Argentina and it could not be csught.

When the pilots returned to their base the sphere appeared again at the dam. But the same thing happened: they began a pursuit and then lost sight of it. The sphere moved away changing color from its original red to yellow.

Another similar case happened to a group of military pilots in 1996, that is to say, to qualified observers who were on exercises at the base of Santa Bernardina. Like that one night in '86 they saw two luminous spheres, which was corroborated by the air traffic control tower at the airport. But when fleeing they maintained their form and luminosity, which served to confirm their spherical form.

A few minutes later, saw that the spheres began to lose brightness maintaining only their illuminated contour. "They were not satellites flying in formation since they were at 10,000 feet (approx. 3,000 meters)," said Sanchez.

Another one of the countless reports is that presented by pilots of a commercial airplane of the national flag, returning from Paraguay in 1979 and chased by a highly luminous object that was even photographed by passengers on board. It is also a case without explanation

The Air Force also has graphic testimony of a dozen animals whose bodies appeared mutilated with wounds made with surgical precision. The facts date from 2002. There was never a coherent explanation, but investigations by the military commission suggests the hypothesis that this was a possible biochemical attack, which probably happened in Argentina during the same period where there were almost 700 animals mutilated without explanation.

"It may have been the result of a wind from the West," said the officer. The FAU did not discard the hypothesis of an extraterrestrial event. It is another case without answers.

The military statistics show the usual profile of witnesses as generally being a relatively young man up to 45 years of age. They also indicate that all the cases happen in the early hours of the night and mostly involve a single witness.

49% of the statistics report the appearance of luminous spheres and just 2% include the observation of beings.

ABDUCTION
Uruguay has been no stranger to close encounters of the third kind.

Most horrifying of any story involving UFOs is to listen to complaints about abduction of persons for purposes of research.

The clearest memory of an abduction is the case of the marriage of Betty and Barney Hill, supposedly kidnapped on a road in New Hampshire, United States, in 1961 and subjected to experiments on the part of aliens, whose details are reported in hypnosis sessions.

In Uruguay there were several cases that remain open, many surrounded by speculation. One happened in 1980 in Playa Pascual [beach] involving a camper. It was on the coast at night and suddenly people of short stature appeared and immobilized him before he was transported to a ship where he was subjected to tests. When he later woke up in his tent he found himself paralyzed for a short time.

There was another case where a family in a car suffered what is called "lost time" They reported that while traveling on a highway an airship landed in front of their vehicle and they could not explain what happened to them for several minutes.

The work of the "contacts", that is to say, the people who use their extra-sensory perception to communicate or to have experience with extraterrestrials, have nothing to do with the Air Force, which naturally deals with empirical evidence and solid research, noted Colonel Sanchez.

These people can make "an act of faith" but "we never have never proved anything," said the military man. Even in the mythical area "La Aurora", located at the southern border of the department of Salto which has produced several stories. According to the reports which came to the ears of the officials, speaking of a world within this zone, a sort of parallel universe that serves to recharge the energy for these ships. "We investigated and never found anything strange. There is no evidence of anything dangerous or unknown. It was tested and no radioactivity or anything else of importance was found," he said.

Close by are several high-tension pylons that carry power from Salto Grande towards UTE. There is a river, Daymán, that emits gases and minerals from deep in the Earth due to the thermal zone. "Everything that could produce some static or other phenomenon was examined, but nothing abnormal has been found," he affirmed.

La Fuerza Aérea no publicará un "Libro Azul" conteniendo el resultado de estos treinta años de investigaciones, pero El País, por decisión del mando, accedió a registros y testimonios.

Si bien la comisión de la Fuerza Aérea que estudia el caso funciona hace pocas décadas, el fenómeno OVNI se inició aproximadamente en 1947 en Uruguay al despuntar el entusiasmo mundial por los avistamientos.

Aunque no es Roswell, Nuevo México -lugar emblemático en el tema de los extraterrestres-, Uruguay es un lugar catalogado como propicio para los avistamientos de objetos no identificados, reconoció el coronel Ariel Sánchez, un oficial de la Fuerza Aérea con 33 años de servicio activo y que desde 1989 integra la comisión sobre los OVNI y actualmente la preside.

El organismo funciona en una pequeña oficina ubicada en el centro de Montevideo y tiene una base informática y un archivo en papel, aún no respaldado tecnológicamente. Hay cientos de expedientes armados en carpetas verdes, bajo el rótulo de "reservado" y que contienen testimonios, fotografías, croquis, dibujos, documentos y evaluaciones hechas por los oficiales.

Casos sin resolver. Los archivos están formados por denuncias que se presentan a un ritmo de 100 casos por año.

La comisión ha recibido en toda su actuación aproximadamente 2.100 denuncias concretas, ha investigado y descartado muchas por distintos motivos, pero hay más de 40 casos sin explicación.

Esos expedientes se mantienen abiertos, e incluyen desde avistamientos y el aterrizaje de supuestas naves, hasta las llamadas abducciones, es decir denuncias sobre el secuestro de personas por parte de entidades extraterrestres.

La definición internacional concebida por el astrofísico estadounidense Allen Haynek divide estas situaciones en tres categorías: los contactos del primer tipo son aquellos con avistamiento; los del segundo tipo son los que registran un aterrizaje; y los del tercer tipo, los más explotados por la cinematografía, refieren a un encuentro con un objeto no identificado y sus tripulantes.

La tarea de la comisión militar es reunir un registro de casos y elaborar pautas o conclusiones sobre su veracidad y origen. Y ha obtenido resultados concretos: "La comisión consiguió determinar modificaciones a la composición química del suelo donde se denunciaron aterrizajes. El fenómeno existe. Puede ser desde un fenómeno que se da en la parte baja de la atmósfera, el aterrizaje de una aeronave de una fuerza aérea extranjera, hasta la teoría extraterrestre. Puede tratarse de una sonda de vigilancia procedente del espacio, del mismo modo que nosotros enviamos una sonda a explorar mundos lejanos", admitió el oficial. "El fenómeno OVNI existe en el país. Insisto: la Fuerza Aérea no descarta una hipótesis extraterrestre en base a nuestro análisis científico", subrayó Sánchez.

EVIDENCIA. La comisión guarda aún varios expedientes en papel, sobre todo de los de casos que están abiertos. La FAU ahora ha desclasificado toda la información, aún los expedientes rotulados "reservado". Solo se protege la identidad de los denunciantes.

Aeronave. Repasando el archivo, hay toda clase de situaciones. En un caso ocurrido tiempo atrás en un campo del departamento de Durazno, el testigo denunció la aparición de luces de colores durante una noche. Al brindar su testimonio a la comisión esta persona marcó con gran detalle los lugares donde se habría posado una aeronave. Analizada la composición química del suelo, se descubrió un aumento en los valores de minerales como cromo, manganeso, fósforo y carbono, lo cual permitió concluir a los estudiosos la verosimilitud de la denuncia.

En los registros militares hay otro caso singular. Es la aparición de dos esferas rojizas, volando en silencio unos metros encima de la cabeza de dos troperos que arriaban ganado. Los aparatos se movían a gran velocidad en direcciones opuestas y luego desaparecieron hacia el Oeste a gran velocidad.

Los registros indican que los meses de mayor aparición de objetos son febrero, marzo, julio y octubre. En febrero de este año la comisión recibió numerosas denuncias acompañadas por fotografías digitales. La fotografía o filmación no es determinante para ningún caso, sino un aporte, explicó Sánchez, dado que actualmente hay muchas posibilidades técnicas de hacer montajes.

En Palmar. Los casos sin resolver tienen un alto nivel de extrañeza para la FAU. Por ejemplo, la persecución en que se embarcaron dos aviones militares Pucará en una noche de 1986. Ocurrió en la represa de Palmar, sobre la cual hallaron evolucionando una esfera luminosa. Los pilotos se juntaron y decidieron perseguirla. Cuando intentaron interceptarla, la esfera escapó a velocidad de vértigo en dirección a Argentina y no pudo ser alcanzada.

Cuando los pilotos volvían a su base, la esfera apareció otra vez sobre la represa. Pero sucedió lo mismo: comenzaron la persecución y la perdieron de vista. La esfera se alejó del lugar cambiando de color, del rojizo inicial al amarillo.

El regreso. Otro caso similar le ocurrió a un grupo de pilotos militares en 1996, es decir a observadores calificados que hacían ejercicios en la base de Santa Bernardina, en Durazno. Como en aquella noche del 86, vieron dos esferas luminosas, lo cual fue corroborado por la torre de control de tráfico del aeropuerto. Pero al huir mantuvieron su forma y luminosidad, lo cual sirvió para confirmar su forma esférica.

Unos minutos después, los pilotos vieron que las esferas comenzaron a perder brillo manteniendo sólo su contorno iluminado. "No eran satélites porque no vuelan en formación ni tan bajo, ya que estaban a 10.000 pies (3.000 metros aproximadamente), y tampoco atenúan su luminosidad", dijo Sánchez.

Otra de las incontables denuncias es la que presentaron los pilotos de un avión comercial de bandera nacional que, en 1979, regresando desde Paraguay, fue perseguido por un objeto de fuerte luminosidad que, incluso, fue fotografiado por pasajeros del avión. También es un caso sin explicación

Animales mutilados. La Fuerza Aérea también tiene testimonios gráficos de una decena de animales mutilados cuyos cuerpos aparecieron con heridas hechas con precisión quirúrgica. Los hechos datan de 2002. Nunca hubo una explicación coherente, pero las investigaciones de esta comisión militar apuntan a la hipótesis de que se trató de un posible ataque bioquímico, probablemente ocurrido en Argentina donde en la misma época hubo casi 700 animales mutilados sin explicación.

"Puede haber sido la consecuencia del viento procedente del Oeste", declaró el oficial. La FAU no descartó la hipótesis de un evento extraterrestre. Es otro caso sin respuestas.

Patrones. Las estadísticas militares muestran el perfil habitual de los denunciantes como el de un hombre joven, hasta 45 años de edad. Señalan asimismo que todos los casos ocurren en las primeras horas de la noche, en su gran mayoría con un solo testigo.

El 49% de la estadística lo conforman denuncias de aparición de esferas luminosas y apenas un 2% incluyen la observación de seres.

ABDUCCIONES. Uruguay no ha estado ajeno a los encuentros cercanos del tercer tipo.

Lo más espeluznante de cualquier relato sobre OVNI suele ser escuchar una denuncia sobre secuestros de personas con fines de investigación, es decir las abducciones.

El recuerdo más patente de una abducción es el caso del matrimonio de Betty y Barney Hill, supuestamente secuestrados en una carretera de New Hampshire, Estados Unidos, en 1961 y sometidos a experimentos por parte de extraterrestres, cuyos detalles relataron en sesiones de hipnosis.

En Uruguay hubo varios casos que permanecen abiertos, muchos rodeados de espectacularidad. Uno ocurrió en 1980 en Playa Pascual y tuvo como protagonista a un acampante. Estaba sobre la costa, de noche, y de repente se le aparecieron personas de baja estatura que lo inmovilizaron y transportaron a una nave para ser sometido a exámenes. Luego, despertó en su carpa con problemas de movilidad.

Hubo otro caso donde una familia en un auto sufrió lo que se llama "perdida temporal". Relataron que mientras viajaban por una carretera los sobrevoló una aeronave que se posó delante del vehículo. Y no pudieron explicar qué les sucedió durante varios minutos.

Fe y realidad en estancia La Aurora
El trabajo de los "contactados", es decir, las personas que utilizan su percepción extrasensorial para comunicarse o tener experiencia con extraterrestres, no ayuda para nada a la Fuerza Aérea que, naturalmente, se maneja con evidencia empírica e investiga sobre terreno sólido, señaló el coronel Sánchez. "Yo soy católico, creyente, pero esto es otra cosa; es un tema técnico", aclaró.

Esas personas pueden hacer "un acto de fe" pero "nunca nos han dado pruebas de nada", dijo el militar. Incluso, la mítica estancia "La Aurora", ubicada en la frontera Sur del departamento de Salto aloja varias historias. Según los relatos llegados a oídos de los oficiales, se habla de un mundo intra terreno, una especie de universo paralelo que sirve de zona de recarga de energía para estas naves. "Fuimos, investigamos y nunca encontramos nada extraño. No hay indicios de nada peligroso o desconocido. Se testeó la radiactividad y no surgió nada relevante", dijo.

Cerca de la estancia hay varias torres de alta tensión que transportan la energía desde Salto Grande hacia UTE. Hay un río, el Daymán, y emanación de gases de minerales del fondo de la tierra a causa de la zona termal. "Todo eso podría producir alguna estática o fenómeno, pero nada anormal", afirmó.
