  INTRUDERS IN BLACK
  Posted May 25.03

Ever since antiquity people have recorded encounters with a horrifying man dressed in black, riding a horse. Later they perceived him as Satan, travelling in a black carriage pulled by four horses. Legends tell about tall black men visiting people and making threats against them.
The term “Men in Black” appeared in the 1960s, after American ufologist Albert K. Bender claimed that he had been tormented by sinister men, dressed in black, wearing priest-like clothes.

The classic profile of these phantom visitors, parodized by Hollywood producers, includes three men, pale-faced, wearing black suits and sunglasses, appearing all of a sudden in a black limousine, while pretending to be government officials. They forced eyewitnesses or frightened people into not saying a word about what they had experienced, and then withdrew without leaving any traces behind them. However, this process does not exhaust all contemporary manifestations and transformations of the phenomenon across our planet.

Following some incomprehensible irregularities, the mysterious “men in black” came into our country during the height of great social changes in Bulgaria at the close of 1980s. The enigmatic messengers appeared like phantom silhouettes, as well as tangible creatures, leaving behind material proof of their presence. During the evening of December 27, 1988, 84 years old Dochka Chaprazova and her 11-year-old granddaughter were surprised by a series of vigorous blows over the walls and furniture of their house in the village of Dibich, near Shoumen. During the following days the tempestuous poltergeist furiously disordered refrigerators, tables and chairs and terrorized the Chaprazovs. Once, the mother, named Stefanka, noticed a tall figure standing on their glazed porch, "something like a very tall, black-clothed man with his head, as if cone-shaped, touching the ceiling". The phantom stood at that spot for a few seconds before vanishing.

On a July evening in 1990, a soldier on point duty at the aircraft hanger area of Kamenets garrison in Pleven, was driven to madness by a similar creature he encountered. According to the affected Roumen Dimitroff, half an hour after having taken guard of the site he noticed a strange light and came closer in order to determine what was going on. Suddenly he caught sight of figure resembling that of a swiftly moving man, just a few meters away from him, who was dressed in a hooded cape but had no face or legs. Dimitroff shouted “Freeze! Or I will shoot you!”. However, the black silhouette came closer and Dimitroff fired off five bullets at the figure when he was within two or three steps of him. It was then the soldier felt a sharp pain in his left arm before he passed out. After the “twilight zone” incident, Dimitroff was sent for treatment to a medical institute for military officials. “Men in black” have been seen by military men from other garrisons and the similarities of these encounters turn the theory of hallucinations, caused by overworking and emotional collapse, into quite an unconvincing argument.

Early in September, 1993, Stoyan Velkov, a 19 year old from Panagyurishte, shared his terrifying experience as a soldier on point duty in an outfit based at Haskovo that very year, with Bulgarian ufology doyen Dimitar Delyan. The boy narrative of events strange sound effects and the appearance of a faceless dark man’s silhouette in the night of August the 24th. Before the eyes of Velkov, a lieutenant, a sergeant, and a private another silhouette ”was trying to get out” or pass through the concrete wall of the outfit and his head quite literally was ”bulging out of the concrete”, as if it had been made ofan elastic substance. Before and after the incident all the soldiers had suffered nightmares involving multiple dark silhouettes, arranged in a semi-circle against a fiery background. Velkov passed a thorough psychiatric examination and he was duly certified as being sane.

A series of documented cases shows that the mysterious “men in black” are much too real only to be dismissed as an illusionary trick of light and shadows, or the creation of a highly imaginative brain. In 1989 an unidentified flying object hung over the house of a resident in the village of Karapelit, near Dobrich. The woman who lived inside encountered a dark-coloured creature. Another object landed near Dobrich and left a powder-like substance behind it, identified as polypropilene used in space technologies.

On the 17th of December, 1989 a UFO and several humanoids, were spotted wandering between a military sanatorium and residence for government officials in Bankya. Between 4.30 and 5 a.m. Colonel Gancho Ivanov noticed a silver oval object, belching out blue flames, descend some 200m. away from the hydropathy sanatorium. A little later he spotted three man-like figures some 3 meters in height, walk stiffly from the craft and head towards the center of town. Under the intense light of the streetlamps Zinoviya Yankova, a director in BNTV, also saw the same creatures and was able to discern that they had disproportionately long limbs, were wearing dark or grayish tight overalls, and had featureless faces as if hidden under a smooth mask. After a short walk the strangers came back to their flying saucer, which then took off and gained height surrounded by raging flames as it flew away in a northerly direction. Eleven days later Doctor Valeri Yanev found right-angled 40 centimeters long foot-prints, with rounded ends, in the street in front of the sanatorium, before snow quickly covered them up. The incident caused a great sensation among Bulgarian ufology at the time.

Five months later a midnight meeting with 2 meter high humanoids tested the self-control of three women, aged about 45, as they were making their way along a street in the village of Skalitsa, Bourgas province, on the evening of May 19th, 1990. It was then they caught sight of the dark silhouettes four meters in front of them. The creatures, who appeared as if made of a black, thick substance, walked quickly away from the women in the moonless darkness. After a while, a pulsing spherical body, spinning counter-clockwise, popped up in front of the villagers and it was enough for them to leave their meeting place without looking back.

The experience of the 49-year-old carter, named Trajcho Kolev from Verdikal (a block in Bankya), is undoubtedly in the top 10 of the most mysterious meetings with “men in black” in all of Bulgaria. On the 27 of November, 1990, at about 4 p.m., he was coming home on foot from the market in Divotino village, near Klisoura and as it became dark it started raining. At about 6 p.m. a large noiseless sphere of various shades of red fell in front of him at a place known as the Odzhini graveyards. A two-meter-high creature without any visible nose, mouth, hands or legs, came out of the sphere dressed in a black cape and wearing a pointed triangular hat. The phantom, as it penetrated into Traycho’s mind, started talking to him. Then an unknown force raised the villager with lightning speed towards the sky, where the Satan’s slave was floating. After a flight high in the sky Traycho was dropped near the village of Meshitza, 12 kilometers away from the meeting place. In the morning he somehow got to Pernik, caught the train and went home. It was then his wife noticed that his working clothes were ingrained with brick-red dust.

In what was to become known as the so-called Herakov anomaly, a mysterious appearance of red dust at a kindergarten on the 3rd of October, 1991 prompted an editorial team from “5F” magazine of that time, to head towards the village of Herakovo, Sofia district. The researchers came across a sealed village house whose interior, including the bulges on the wall and the sills, had been covered with a layer of substance similar to red pepper triturated brick. Despite the attempts to clear the dust, it constantly materialized itself inside the closed premises. The scientists’ confusion became apparent when the analysis of the chemist Traycho Dobrev, from the laboratory of CLFHM in BAS, showed that it was an organic substance resembling aniline paint. While the findings of his colleague, Doctor Borislav Mednikarov, showed presence of oval spores resistant to sulphurous acid and temperatures of over 700oC. Infrared spectrum pictures also revealed that there was a vertical energizing pillar passing through the house. The medium Robert Yovchev found a “ energizing geyser” which, according to him, was an artificial break of a parallel world into which the reddish particles rushed as abnormal, spontaneously-generated forms of life. Those who stayed in the house had the feeling of something ” wrong, unnatural and even sinister”. Mediums, having visited the home, declared unanimously that all radiations and substances were unhealthy and harmful to man.

The manager Dimitar Dimitrov shared that he had heard soft stamping and voices, in spite of the door to the house being locked. When he touched the dust for the first time, he had a strange dream - almost real. He was in the house, surrounded by three man-like giants dressed in black leather trousers and black silk shirts, their faces thin and in a way flat. They wanted to take him to outer space and forced him to memorize some ideograms. The teacher Roumyana Boukova had also taken some dust and had nightmares connected with kidnapping by aliens. The motive in this threat brings the cases from Herakovo closer to the classical scenario of a meeting with “ the men in black”.

One of the last meetings with the demonic messengers from this period happened at about 4 o’clock on the 6th of September, 1993 when a black figure of a humanoid creature flew towards the sky in front of the eyes of Petko Chavdarov, 79-year old from Belish village, near Troyan. The man had gone out in the field to tend his cow when he saw that someone was ransacking his potato field. First he thought that a thief was gathering food for the winter, but then he managed to distinguish a silhouette in monastic clothes. "When I came closer, the black creature silently flew away and disappeared beyond the horizon", he said. The old man also noticed 40 centimetre fiery ball rushing past the yard of his neighbour Dimitar Kanchev.

What is hidden behind the appearance of the “men in black” in our country? Are the phantoms in black a litmus for our own insecurity and restlessness for the future, or creatures from parallel worlds and messengers from deep outer space? Having in mind the phenomenon prototype, some theologians believe that in those days our society was attacked by fiendish forces, looking for power and influence over the human souls in an age of social and spiritual upsurge. Only the fear and silence of many eyewitnesses can prevent us from understanding that the invasion is still continuing up to now.
